Top Rated Sump Pumps and
Sump Pump Battery Back Up Systems

Pick the top rated sump pumps and sump pump battery back up with my reliable tips and buying guide. I’ve written this page so you can find the best sump pump for your home and your budget.

And you can see my best sump pump recommendation for homeowners: the Zoeller M53 Mighty-mate Submersible Sump Pump on Amazon.

The two main styles of top rated sump pumps are submersible and pedestal. The submersible sump pump style is really the most popular choice. And I highly recommend them for residential installation. Submersible sump pumps are competitively priced and efficient. And they’re quiet too! There's nothing worse than hearing irritating sump pump noise all over your house.

I highly recommend the Zoeller M53 Mighty-mate Submersible Sump Pump with 1/3HP, on Amazon, as the best submersible sump pump value for homeowners.

Here’s why: the 1/3HP motor size is the right power size for the average sized home & it makes little to no noise when it’s running. And this Zoeller M53 sump pump has a high quality cast iron switch case, motor and pump housing.

The Zoeller M53 will pump a maximum of 2,580 gallons per hour. It’s a workhorse!

A submersible pump is installed inside your sump pit and is completely sealed. Because submersible style sump pumps are installed below your basement floor level, their operating noise is dampened, and you won’t hear the sump pump noise all over your house.

And then there are pedestal style sump pumps. A pedestal pump is shaped like a stick with a round head. The body & motor of a pedestal pump is mounted above the sump pit. Pedestal pumps are non submersible sump pumps.

You’ll find that, generally speaking, top rated pedestal pumps can be found at a slightly lower price point. And because the motor is mounted above the floor, it is easier to service – or remove - a pedestal pump. But, I want to warn you, it will be louder when it’s running, when compared to a submersible sump pump.

I can recommend the Flotec FPPM3600D 1/3 HP Pedestal Sump Pump on Amazon.

This pedestal style sump pump will pump up to 3,480 gallons per hour (GPH), is designed with a non-clogging impeller and has a top screen inlet with 1.25” discharge. The Flotec FPPM3600D has both thermoplastic and cast iron construction with an 6 foot, 3 prong cord/plug.

And you can check Amazon’s price on the Flotec FPPM3600D Pedestal Sump Pump.

I guess there will always be a debate about whether a pedestal or submersible model is the top rated sump pumps style, but, personally, I prefer the submersible sump pump.

The Right Sump Pump Size to Choose when You’re Comparing Top Rated Sump Pumps

It’s important to choose the right sump pump size! You’ll want the right amount of horsepower, in your pump motor, to keep your basement dry. But you don’t want excessive horsepower, or you’ll pay too much for power you really don’t need.

I like to tell readers that one of the easiest ways to tell what sump pump size you need is to look at your previous (or existing) pump. If you have already have a pump, look at its data plate.

sump pump data plate

All the top rated sump pumps have a rectangular data plate on them. And the data plate lists the brand name, model, volts, and the horsepower (HP). If your old or current pump was doing a good job, you should really stick with the same HP motor size in your new pump. Looking at your old pump is really the fastest way for sizing a sump pump.

Don’t have an old pump to check? Don’t worry. When it comes to sump pump sizing, I can tell you that most average-sized homes need a 1/3 HP sump pump. Actually, 1/3 HP models are the best selling size on the market.

Here's my handy sump pump comparison chart:

But, if your old sump pump just couldn’t handle the job, or you live in a larger home, then you should consider bumping up to a ½ HP unit. Getting a stronger ½ HP sump pump size is really helpful if you need to raise the water up higher, in order to discharge it, or you have a long horizontal run.
