Sump Pump Check Valve Failure

Yes, if you have sump pump check valve failure, you can actually burn up your sump pump because it will run continuously. And, as you know, once your pump fails, you run the risk of a major basement flood.

Let’s talk about the main reasons homeowners experience sump pump check valve failure – and how to troubleshoot it.

·       I hate to say it, but all working parts eventually wear out and die. And, over time, your sump pump check valve can simply wear out and fail. Then it’s time to read sump pump check valve reviews to choose a replacement.

·       A clogged check valve is a very common reason for sump pump check valve failure. It’s really common for pebble, gravel, debris or bits of mud to build up around your valve assembly. And a clogged check valve just won’t operate. You’ll want to take the check valve off the discharge pipe, and empty it out over a trash can, then rinse it out.

·       Are you sure the electrical outlet, that your sump pump is hooked up to, is giving adequate power? I recommend plugging in a light into the electrical outlet to make sure you’re getting juice. And needless to say, if your utility power goes out, your sump pump won’t run.

·       Also, I’ve seen sump pump check valve failure that was caused by a blocked air relief hole in the discharge line. Just a little bit of debris can get stuck in the air relief hole and cause an air lock to form.  Air relief holes are usually about 1/16 – 3/16” and you can usually just clean them out with the end of a paper clip.

Sump Pump Check Valve Installation

Have you re-checked your sump pump check valve installation? Because, if you’re having problems, before you start consulting sump pump check valve reviews to get a replacement valve, you’ll want to check your installation. Yes, improper installation can often lead to sump pump check valve failure.

Check the position of your sump check valve – is it installed on a discharge pipe that has a vertical rise?  Proper sump pump check valve installation is to affix it to a vertically rising hose.

Another sump pump check valve installation tip is to make sure the water flow arrow is pointing up. Yes, it sounds simple, but you’d be surprised how many times I’ve seen it installed where the arrow points down. The arrow, which indicated the check valve flow, must be pointing up. Or you risk check valve failure.

As you’re inspecting your sump pump check valve installation, take a good look at the condition of your pipes. See rust, cracks, etc on your pipes? Replace them now, while you have the chance.

Now you’re armed with the right information to choose or repair your sump pump check valve.
