As you can see, installing a sump pump cover and sealing it with silicone is a job just about any homeowner can do properly!

Do you have radon in your home?

Do think you have a radon problem in your home? Or do you know that you have a dangerous radon gas?

After all, radon gas is invisible and odorless, which makes it harder to detect. You should have your basement assessed by a radon specialist – or you can buy a home radon test kit yourself. Either way, a test will confirm whether you have existing radon gas problems.

I recommend the First Alert RD1 Radon Gas Test Kit on Amazon to test your basement. It's EPA recommended and it's a complete test kit and the lab fee is included!

Check Amazon's price on the First Alert RD1 Test Kit.

And a tightly sealed sump pump cover will keep random objects from falling into the sump pit an possibly damaging your submersible sump pump. (If you have kids, trust me, get a sealed sump pump cover!)

And if you need more information on how the First Alert Radon Test Kit works, you can read the instruction manual here. Or you can read more at the First Alert website.

Do I need a sump pump pit cover?

You might be wondering, ‘do I need a sump pump pit cover?’. Let’ talk about the top reasons you should consider for installing a sump pump pit cover over your sump basin:

sump pump cover

A sump pump it cover will keep sump pit moisture from entering your basement. And less moisture & humidity in your basement will help keep your basement comfortable -  and help keep dangerous molds from developing.

A sump pump pit cover will help keep smelly sump pit odors from rising into your basement. And a radon sump pump cover will help keep out cancer causing radon gas from your home basement.

You can check out my #1 radon sump pump cover recommendation: the Original Radon Sump Pump Dome on Amazon.

A great reason for installing a sump pump pit cover is that it will actually muffle the noise of your running sump pump! You’ll hear less sump pump noise if you have a sump pump pit cover.

If you have kids or pets, you’ll want to put in a sump pump pit cover to keep them out of your sump pit.

Also, a sump pump pit cover will keep objects from falling into your sump basin! You don’t want any objects falling into your sump pump basin & damaging your pump.

And if you're looking for an FHA mortgage for your new home, don't forget the the FHA has strict sump pump and sump pump cover requirements.

In my opinion, these are some important reasons why every homeowner should install a sump pump pit cover.  A sump pump pit cover is a fairly inexpensive purchase – you can get a standard version or a heavy duty radon sump pump cover for about $100 or less. And they should last for years.

So, I think a sump pump pit cover is a necessary and practical investment for any homeowner.

Another benefit of having a radon sump pump cover.....

Even if you're not sure you need to get a radon sump pump cover,  there's another clear benefit from adding a sump pump cover to your sump pit: you'll greatly reduce the humidity in your basement!

Yes, if you have a lot of humidity in your basement, you know you're at high risk mold and mildew growth. I always tell my readers that the basement humidity level should be at 55% - or below, for safety. Actually, 50% is even better.

You can check out my #1 radon sump pump cover recommendation: the Original Radon Sump Pump Dome on Amazon.

For me, installing a sump pump cover is an easier and cheaper solution than buying a new dehumidifier. And paying for the electricity to constantly run it!

So, even if you don't need a sump pump cover because of radon gas, a sump pump cover on your sump pit will lower the humidity in your basement!

How to remove a sump pump cover .......

radon sump pump cover

There eventually comes a time when you need to know how to remove a sump pump cover. Maybe your sump pump is not working or its continually running without turning off.

Either way you need to know how to remove a sump pump cover or radon sump pump cover in order to visually inspect your sump pump or remove your sump pump to repair or replace it.

But my best advice, before you learn how to remove a sump pump cover is to disconnect the power cord – first – before you begin removing the sump lid! Always unplug your pump before you start working on removing your sump pump pit cover or radon sump pump cover.

Let’s review some easy tips to remove a sump pump cover safely & quickly:

  • Many sump pump cover styles are “screw-on” types that are locked securely in place by twisting the cover until it locks. These locking sump pump cover types can be unlocked by gently but firmly twisting the lid 1” – 2” until the lock tabs are disconnected. Then you can lift off the sump pump lid.
  • Some sump pump covers have screws or bolts holding the lid in place. It’s usually only a matter of unscrewing it and gently lifting the sump pump cover up a few inches to look inside your sump pump basin and diagnose your problem. Or check on your sump pump float. A flashlight helps you see inside your pit after you remove a sump pump cover.
  • You may have a sealed sump pump cover. Especially if you have a radon sump pump cover. If you have a sealed sump pump cover, you’ll see sealant or caulk around the diameter of your sump pump cover. You’ll want to cut any sealant with a utility knife and pull it off the lid.
  • If you need to pull out your sump pump from the pit, you’ll need to cut your sump pump cover or cut your discharge pipe, to completely remove your sump pump pit cover.

Yes, eventually almost all homeowners need to know how to remove a sump pump cover.

Sump Pump Cover Types

As you’re shopping around for the best sump pump cover for your basement, you may have seen sump pump covers in different colors. So let’s review about the different sump pump cover colors and which might be best for you:

You’ve probably seen some of the new clear sump pump covers on the internet. I was originally intrigued with the idea of a clear sump pump cover because you would be able to see directly into your sump pump pit - without removing your sealed cover.

Clear sump pump covers are usually made of Lexan or a clear polycarbonate. And I should say that clear sump pump covers are usually less expensive than the standard, non-clear versions that come in grey or black. But after doing a lot of research, and reading comments from readers, I recommend staying away from clear sump pump covers.

This sump pump cover is designed to fit well with almost all sump pit basins with an 18

Check Amazon's price on the AK Industries Sump Pump cover.

Why? Clear sump pump covers are so much lighter than the standard black/grey radon sump pump covers: about 1 lb versus 11lbs, which makes them easy to crack or split. So far, clear sump pump covers just aren’t made as strong or thick as standard sump pump covers, and if you’re like me and want to keep all gases and smells out of your basement, you’ll want a standard, tightfitting radon sump pump cover.

I can actually stand on my standard, black radon sump pump cover without breaking the seal or the PVC. You can’t do that on a clear sump pump cover. So, for my money & peace of mind, I have a black radon sump pump cover installed in my basement.

Installing a Radon Sump Pump Cover

If you're looking for some handy tips on installing a radon sump pump cover, view or download this sump pump cover tip manual & sheet.

Before we bought our current home, here in Pennsylvania, we had our basement tested for radon. Unfortunately, there was a radon gas problem so we installed a sealed radon sump pump cover to help mitigate the gases.

We know that our radon gas problem isn’t entirely fixed by adding a radon sump pump cover, because radon can come into our home through floor cracks, wall holes/cracks, or floor drains. But the cover really helped lessen the gas levels in the basement, so we feel we're much safer!

Sealed Sump Pump Cover

If you want some tips on making a sealed sump pump cover, you can learn more here:

First, get a sump pump cover that has the appropriate cut outs for your discharge pipe, vent tube, etc. Look for a sump pump cover with a rubber gasket, for more air tight protection. And you’ll want to make sure that your float switch is able to move freely, before you finish your sealed sump pump cover.

When you seal up your radon sump pump cover, make sure you use a silicone caulk sealant. Don’t use a cheaper polyurethane sealant – it just won’t hold up over the long run and you won't have a tightly sealed sump pump cover.

What is radon? Video

If you're still wondering what is radon - and why it's so bad for us - this short video should answer your questions:

What kind of sealant should I use on my radon sump pump cover?

After you've gotten your radon sump pump cover installed, you'll want to think about sealing your sump pump cover. Yes, radon gas can flow back into your house from the smallest gaps or cracks. So you want to seal up your radon sump pump cover.

Buy a quality silicone caulk sealant for around your sump pump cover. I recommend 100% pure silicone caulk. Definitely not a water based caulk.

Silicone caulk sealant gives your the best elasticity & it stays flexible a lot longer than polyurethane caulk sealant.

Yes, I know that latex sealant is the cheapest to use on a radon sump pump cover. That's the reason a lot of contractors use it. Ugh.

But I highly recommend using a quality pure silicone caulk on your sump pump cover, for best coverage, longevity & peace of mind.
