What is a sump pump - and how does it work?

Many basements get damp. Mild dampness can be eliminated with a dehumidifier. If that was all a homeowner ever had to worry about, there would never be a need for a sump pump. Unfortunately, some basements are more than damp, water builds up and slowly floods the area. Even if water only accumulates occasionally, then dries quickly; you can have trouble with rust, rot, mold, and poor indoor air quality. The rust and rot can be expensive to repair, but the mold and poor indoor air quality can lead to health trouble for you and your children.

The easiest way to remove the accumulated water is to safely gather it in a sump pit; then install a sump pump to remove it before it can cause any problems. To install a sump pump, a contractor will dig a sump pit in the lowest section of your basement or crawlspace. The pit is dug in this area so that water will drain into it to be removed before it can build up. These pits are usually two feet deep and about eighteen inches in diameter. As the water builds up in the sump pit, it will activate a float in the sump pump. Once activated, the pump will force the water out through a drain pipe and away from your foundation. The pump will have a ''check valve'' that will prevent the water from flowing backward into the sump pit after it shuts off.

Some pumps sit atop a pedestal that covers the sump pit. These are called pedestal pumps. Other pumps can be placed in the sump pit. Called submersible pumps, these pumps are able to tolerate being completely submersed in water while working. Each of these pumps requires electricity or a battery to work. So, what happens when the power goes off during a serious storm? Your basement or crawlspace floods because your pedestal or submersible sump pump is not getting electricity.
